Congratulations!

Our friend and partner, Dr. Amjad Saqib, Founder and Executive Director of Akhuwat, received the Ramon Magasasy Award, considered to be Asia's Nobel Prize, at the beginning of September.

In August 2021, TKE’s CEO, Fayyaz Baqir, and Dr. Amjad Saqib, Founder and Executive Director of Akhuwat, led the first edition of the Development Practice program in partnership with the Bahria University, Lahore Campus. This 5-day workshop aims to help development practitioners, academics and students understand development practices, learn about theory of change and the project cycle, as well as develop the knowledge and skills to design and budget a project.

Two other Ramon Magasasay Award recipients from Pakistan, Shoaib Sultan Khan and Tasneem Siddiqi, also participated as resource persons for this workshop.

Bahria University agreed to extend this partnership and offer a Development Practice course in the Summer and Fall 2022 semesters.

International Society for Participatory Mapping (ISPM)

TKE’s CEO, Fayyaz Baqir, recently joined the International Society of Participatory Mapping (ISPM). The Society’s mission is “to encourage and support the development, experimentation, evaluation, and application of participatory mapping methods globally in order to foster interaction and research in this scientific field, and to coordinate with other organizations in the study of participatory processes, mapping, and quantitative analyses. The Society places a strong emphasis on fostering opportunities between the Global North and South in order to promote a more equal distribution of knowledge and resources.”

As such, the work on social mapping and the tools developed by the ISPM will be valuable assets for TKE in training our partners in the field. Already, some members of the ISPM have expressed interest in training youth in Pakistan in mapping dysfunctional water supply schemes and developing a GIS for better water management. They are also interested in supporting TKE in accessing grants and funding opportunities.

Moreover, at the ISPM’s meeting in August, Fayyaz Baqir shared with members the experience of the Orangi Pilot Project and activist Perween Rahman's work using participatory mapping methods to map settlements in Karachi. Following this presentation, the ISPM expressed interest in hosting Fayyaz Baqir and others who have had experiences of violence against mappers for a future session or webinar to discuss the skills and tactics that can be used to ensure the safety of mappers, particularly those in authoritarian and corrupt countries.

Recommended Film - Into Dust

For readers interested in learning more about the case of activist Perween Rahman, TKE suggests watching the newly released film Into Dust (Prime Video).
OFFICIAL SYNOPSIS

When activist Perween Rahman is murdered, her sister Aquila returns to Karachi, Pakistan to investigate, and finds herself caught up in powerful forces intent on stealing the city’s water. Based on a true story, INTO DUST follows the journey of a woman who worked tirelessly to protect the water rights of Pakistan’s poor and ended up making the ultimate sacrifice.

The film is recommended by TKE’s CEO, Fayyaz Baqir: “Do check it out and spread the word. I can promise it is a story worth hearing and an issue worth thinking (and losing some sleep) over - what happens when our water runs out? We are the direct sufferers of this injustice.”

Visit www.intodustmovie.com to find out more about the film, learn about Perween Rahman and her work, and educate yourself about the water crisis.
